3 Ways to Stay Motivated When You Don’t Know What To Do Next
by Markell R. Morris, Futures in Motion, Inc.
Do you struggle to stay motivated because you don’t know what to do next?
You really want to make a change, yet, you only see obstacles, roadblocks, and closed doors.
You’re not alone. It’s normal to feel that way when you’re searching for answers on which career direction to take.
When I was rebuilding my life and career after loss, I experienced the same thing.
I just couldn’t figure out what to do next. I felt stuck and discouraged. I was desperate to find a way forward.
I read books. I talked to mentors, family, and friends. I watched TedTalks and Super Soul Sunday. All in hopes I would hear something that would help me.
What I learned is that the answers I was searching for were already within me.
Like in the Wizard of Oz, Dorothy, the Lion, Tin Man, and the Scarecrow set off on an elaborate quest to find hope, courage, strength, and wisdom. They had to fight against the bad witch, get through a poison poppy field, and fight off flying monkeys, all in search of the great and powerful Wizard of Oz.
They went through all of that only to find out that all along they had everything they needed within them. They just didn’t know how to tap into it.
When they slowed down and looked back on how far they had come along the yellow brick road, they realized they had everything they needed to be who they longed to be and get where they wanted to go.
The same is true for you.

YOU ALREADY HAVE EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO GO AFTER YOU GOALS
I’ve always loved the Wizard of Oz story, and the message applies to staying motivated as you figure out what to do next in your career. Here are three easy to follow tips:
#1- Surround yourself with positive, encouraging people
It’s been said that you are the sum of the 5 people with whom you spend the most time. This includes your online community. Make sure you’re spending plenty of time with people who encourage and affirm you.
#2- Learn how to redirect your thoughts to stay encouraged
While you can’t stop discouraging thoughts from emerging, you do have the power to redirect and refocus your thoughts. You can build this habit in just a few minutes every day by intentionally focusing on positive things- what you’re grateful for, what you’ve accomplished, what you’re looking forward to. Block off a few minutes every day to do this.
#3- Fill your environment with positivity
Positive affirmations and quotes will help you maintain a positive mindset. Create a file with positive, encouraging statements you can refer to when you need a boost of inspiration.
When you start building these habits, you’ll start to experience a change in your perspective toward the future.
Obstacles will become opportunities. You’ll see open doors rather than closed doors. You’ll start to see a path forward. You’ll have the motivation to confidently go after your goals.
